Standard Operating Procedure for DCS Equipment Validation
Purpose
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish a systematic approach for the validation of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) used in the production area, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and operational efficiency.
Scope
This SOP applies to the validation of DCS as a critical software/system used for process control in manufacturing. It encompasses all phases of the validation lifecycle, including Design Qualification (DQ), Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ).
Definitions
- DCS: Distributed Control System, a computerized system that controls production processes.
- Validation: The documented evidence that a system meets its intended use and complies with regulatory requirements.
- CSV: Computerized System Validation, ensuring that computerized systems are compliant with applicable regulations.
Roles
- Validation Team: Responsible for planning and executing validation activities.
- Quality Assurance: Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and reviews validation documentation.
- IT Department: Provides technical support and ensures system integrity.
Lifecycle Procedure
- Design Qualification (DQ): Establish user requirements and ensure design meets those requirements.
- Installation Qualification (IQ): Verify that the DCS is installed according to specifications.
- Operational Qualification (OQ): Test the system’s operational performance against predefined criteria.
- Performance Qualification (PQ): Confirm that the DCS performs consistently under normal operating conditions.
GDP Controls
Good Documentation Practices (GDP) must be followed throughout the validation process. All documents must be clear, concise, and maintained in a controlled manner.
Acceptance Criteria Governance
Acceptance criteria for validation activities shall be based on User Requirements Specifications (URS) and must comply with Annex 11 of 21 CFR Part 11. All criteria must be documented and approved prior to validation activities.
Calibration/PM Governance
Regular calibration and preventive maintenance of the DCS must be performed according to the manufacturer’s specifications and internal procedures to ensure continued compliance and performance.
Change Control Triggers
Changes to the DCS, including software updates, hardware modifications, and process changes, will trigger a revalidation process to ensure that the system continues to meet its validated state.
Revalidation Triggers and Periodic Review
Revalidation is required after any significant change to the DCS or its operating environment. Additionally, a periodic review of the system will be conducted at least annually to ensure ongoing compliance and performance.
